Public transportation verses car rental?
Hello everyone I will be traveling to CI for the first time in two weeks :D, Can anyone suggest if it would be wise to rent a car for the full week or is it posible to pick up one mid week on the East end. Is there a bus or shuttle that runs to the west an north ends and does it follow a schedule or does the "Island time" rule come in to play? What are the current fuel prices?
Thanks in advance for any recomendations and suggestions.
Steve
This is, of course, just my FWIW. You are on vacation. There are many wonderful things on the island that you will preclude yourselves from seeing if transportation is always a problem. Spend the three hundred bucks and have a good time without your foot nailed to the floor.

Hi Steve! We are going back to Cayman in 2 1/2 weeks for the first time since Ivan and also can't wait. I assume you're staying at Morritts which in my opinion a car is a MUST. You can get a shuttle there but it's pretty pricey per person if I recall. I recently sent a colleague there with her family and she was on a tight budget but sprang for the car and was very glad she did. My neighbors also went down and bought there and were very glad to have the car each time. I would recommend it unless you're staying in the 7 mile beach area. When do you go down? We will be in the SMB area for 2 days on May 2nd then head to Morritts on the 4th for a week.
When you consider the cost of taking "car service" back and forth to and from the airport, add in the expenses of taking a bus here and there (and waiting in the heat to do so), signing up for an "excursion trip" when you can drive to the places yourself, small island, it would certainly be best to rent a car. It would most likely cost about the same, however, you will have the freedom to do what you want, when you want. I agree, that if you are staying on 7MB, a car would not be necessary.
We usually go for two weeks and have always rented a car for the entire time. We have considered not renting for the entire time, but don't like to limit ourselves to the resort area. We think it is more of a hassle not to have a car in case we want it than to pay the rental.
We have done both but we have been there quite a few times and last year we just wanted to "chill" at he pool and especially the pool bar  . This year after looking into the costs, we will probably rent a car just to have it available to hit one of the larger grocery stores etc, Dollar has VW Bugs off season for about $180.00/week. If you rent a car, be sure to read all the posts on what type of insurance to take. Most of us in the US just automatically assume our credit card covers everything. Not true outside the US.
Enjoy, have fun and drive safely (on the left BTW)
Thanks everyone for the feedback!!!! We are staying a Morritts Torguga the last week of this month cant wait. We never been there and are looking forward to the visit just 12 more days and we are there!!!!
We have decided to rent a car but are toying with either renting Avis at the Airport or taking the shuttle to the east end and renting a car or scooter there when needed. I hear that we will be there during carnival week is it worth the trip back to the west end?
thanks again Steve !!
